Planning Canada's Role in the New Global Economy
Historically the Canadian economy has been based on the export of a limited range of products. Economic planning during the Trudeau era attempted but failed to diversify export partners and the commodities Canada sells abroad. That failure can be attributed in part to the narrow structure of the Canadian economy and the federal government's confrontational approach to planning. Today a fundamental restructuring of the Canadian economy is required if Canada is to establish a viable role for itself in the new global economy. This is most likely to be accomplished through a consensual style of economic decision making centered on indicative planning and self-management.
