Exploring the work of Dušan Krstić through comparative diagram approach: Belgrade vs. Novi Sad apartment configurations
With the term ‘Belgrade apartment’ being established in theoretical discourses, this paper questions if there is a typical ‘Novi Sad apartment configuration’ by implementing Bill Hillier and Julienne Hanson diagram methodology as a tool of space rationalisation and intercomparison. The development of Novi Sad, Serbia, into a modernist city in the second half of the twentieth century had largely been achieved through prefabrication. The link between the standardised structural grids and their functions is being investigated through qualitative analysis of apartments designed by a Novi Sad architect, Dušan Krstić. The chosen examples were graphically represented through floor plans, structure diagrams, justified graphs, and convex plans based on the methods established by Hillier and Hanson. Even though Novi Sad dwellings relied on the Belgrade apartment standards, thorough methodological spatial analysis in this study reveals how Novi Sad apartments share certain mathematical and functional patterns that are different from typical Belgrade apartment configurations.
