LA/Pictionary: Students Create Games to Teach and Learn Landscape Architecture
In order to motivate students to focus their creative energies quickly, I employed a game-making exercise to start the spring semester. Junior landscape architecture majors developed a board game similar to the commercial game Pictionary, related it to their field of study. Working in teams, fifteen students created games during the first week of the term, and in the following week they refined and reproduced them and wrote responses to the process. Student reaction was overwhelmingly positive. The stimulating and enjoyable nature of the task promoted social interaction and fostered a cooperative and supportive learning atmosphere in the studio that continued throughout the semester.
