The triaxial and oedometric tests are by far the tests most frequently used in the geotechnical studies on compressible clay soils. However, in spite of their frequency in the world, these tests present some limitations due to the disturbance of samples and the experimental procedures implemented. After a recall of the main conventional oedometric test results with loading by stages and of traditional triaxial tests of various types carried out on the Guiche soft clay (Adour valley, France), four criteria of validity of these test results (criteria of compressibility, consolidation, resistance and rigidity) are proposed in this paper in order to appreciate the test sample disturbance. The effects of disturbance on the yield state of this natural clay are then analyzed.
