Effects of religious practices on water quality of Shahpura lake, Madhya Pradesh, India
Heavy metal contamination and accumulation of sediments, silts, and organic matter in lakes are of great concern worldwide. Idol immersion activity, a religious practice, is responsible for adding pollution load in the water bodies in India. The immersion of idols of Indian gods like Lord Ganesha and the god Durga during Ganesha Utsav and Nav Ratris festivals is one of the major sources of contamination of fresh water bodies. In the water of Shahpura Lake, we observed a marked elevation in pH, hardness, chromium, cadmium and lead after the immersion of idols.
