Application of the contingent valuation method to the Keelung river, Taipei
The purpose of this study is twofold: first, to estimate the economic benefits of water quality improvements to the Keelung river in Taipei by means of the contingent valuation method (CVM); and second, to identify the factors that cause differences of willingness to pay (WTP) for water quality improvements observed among consumers. The survey included 250 residents (186 valid responses). The average WTP was estimated to be about US$8 (±0.95) per person per year. Information about the surveyed environment will affect the WTP of respondents who are less knowledgeable on environmental issues. In addition, we found that the attitudes and perceptions of respondents towards environmental pollution issues have a positive relation to their WTP for environmental quality improvements.
