The criticisms of the multifunction polis project (MFP) are both multifarious and far-reaching, distilling in one debate the major economic, social and cultural concerns of late twentieth century Australians. The issues that have been raised in the multifunction polis debate are explosive. These include the issues of foreign ownership and Japanese takeovers, the alleged ‘Third Wave’ of Asian economic imperialism, immigration and population questions, nationalism andmulticulturalism, internationalism/globalism versus self-reliance and national autonomy, to name but a few of the concerns. (Castles, 1990; Harwood, 1990; Huxley, 1990; James (ed.), 1990; Morris-Suzuki, 1990; Rundle, (ed.), 1990; Smith, 1990 (a)-(f); Sugimoto, 1990).
