Feasibility of irrigation canal linings in Bangladesh
This paper discusses the results of a financial analysis of alternative canal lining techniques on the basis of technical data generated through a series of field experiments. It reveals that for sand soils, constituting 27% of the total irrigable area of Bangladesh, brick lining, precast sections, soil cement, asphalt mats and also clay lining can generate positive financial benefits; but the formidable physical constraints, besides high initial investment costs, may discourage the widescale adoption of these linings. The paper concludes that for fine-textured soils, representing 62% of the total irrigable area, considerable water can be saved by simple compaction of earthen canals using proper engineering design specifications.
