Discovery of the Oldest Church of the World
During December of the year 2000 the Public Archaeological Department of Jordan announced discovery of the new oldest Church in the World, the St. George Church. It dates from the Roman period of A.D. 230. This has been proved through an analysis of the writing and symbols found in the mosaic floors of the church. This important site is located in the northern part of Jordan, 24 kilometers east of the famous city of Gerasa, in a small town named Rihab.
Rihab may be the lost old Roman of Thantia, one of the commercial League of Ten cities established by Pompey, which were given a considerable degree of autonomy and were subject to the Roman governor of Syria.
