The Favela/(Formal) Neighborhood Contrast in the Social Space of Rio de Janeiro
Favelas (squatter settlements) are a widespread phenomenon in the City of Rio de Janeiro. Despite the geographic proximity between the favelas and the upper- and middle-class neighborhoods, the social contrast is striking. But the myth of the favelas as another social world apart from the city, a different world, a separate city, identified by neediness and disorganization, has recently been challenged.
This paper critically reflects upon this (division of the city of Rio de Janeiro by analyzing social and demographic facts and assessing the social distance between the inhabitants of favelas and the inhabitants of upper- and middle-class neighborhoods.
