Spatial and temporal patterns of tourist behaviour
Cooper C. P. (1981) Spatial and temporal patterns of tourist behaviour, Reg. Studies 15, 359–371. The nature of touring behaviour is examined and the results of a survey of tourist movement are outlined. The survey is the first attempt to chart the behaviour of tourists over time. Results show that tourists reduce uncertainty in their exploration of an area by visiting those sites perceived to give greatest reward for effort. The question of the control of movement by manipulating information levels is discussed and current recreation management schemes are shown to implicitly adopt this principle in their control of visitor behaviour.
