Forecasting urban systems: Research design, alternative methodologies and urbanization trends with Canadian examples

Concern with national and regional trends in urban development is now common to most western countries. This paper describes the results of research utilizing urban systems concepts as a basis for forecasting future trends in urbanization in the heartland of urban Canada—southern Ontario and Quebec.
A range of alternative approaches to spatial forecasting for a system of cities is summarized and different trends in urbanization projected by these methods are discussed. The paper concludes with an assessment of the relative merits of the forecasting methods used and comments on the lessons for futures-oriented research.
