Influence of soil variability on differential settlements of buildings
Spatial variability of geometrical and material soil parameters can induce some damage on structures. The resulting disorders can be evaluated through the sensitivity of the structural response when the geotechnical parameters are varying. However a quantitative prediction of differential settlements requires a more specific approach. Two examples, in which the soil-structure interactions have different consequences, will be discussed: rigid raft and flexible hyperstatic structure. Tracks for a simplified modelling allowing the quantification of disorders will be given. We'll show the role played by the relative ratio between the size of the structure and the correlation length of soil properties, and that played by the structural stiffness. These two examples illustrate how an engineer would be able to estimate the safety level regarding effects of soil variability with a sufficient degree of accuracy.
