Urban housing market change as context for transport change: some approaches to analysis
Inter‐relationships between travel behaviour and the residential location decision are frequently discussed in the literature. However, residential location decisions (therefore travel and other communications behaviour) need to be explored in the context of shifts in relative incomes, intra‐urban migration, the effects of changes in residential areas on social mobility and the corresponding processes of the production, devaluation and revaluation of housing sub‐markets, and uneven urban development. Such a context will focus attention on significant discontinuities in housing market behaviour and, accordingly, in travel and communications behaviour. These arguments are developed by reference to three inter‐related approaches to the analysis of urban housing market change, and illustrated with data on housing and transport change in Melbourne, Australia. Policy implications of the arguments are developed.
