The Architectural Archives at the University of Pennsylvania houses a splendid collection of the work of landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. Alongside dozens of other projects, including such notable works as Sea Ranch and Ghiradelli Square, is a large set of documents that illustrate his design for Seattle Freeway Park. Included in the collection for this project are a great variety of renderings, conceptual sketches, site analyses, and project files and notes; one unique item stands out — a 1971 correspondence between Lawrence Halprin & Associates and students at the local Garfield High School. This document helps elucidate both the design process Halprin employed for Seattle Freeway Park and his philosophies regarding the nature of public architecture.
