The dominant norms of the architecture and culture of American domestic structures should be understood by student designers, in order that they can formulate positions that work with – even as they challenge – those norms. Manufactured housing (formerly known as mobile homes, house trailers, or trailer homes) is an underexamined component of the domestic setting. Special processes of regulation, production, and supply have shaped this domestic type. Manufactured housing is important though it is neither widely nor well understood. With its identifiable physical and sociological characteristics, manufactured housing is undeniably significant, affecting people, communities, and settlements.
