Implementing Total Quality Management in Construction through ISO 9001:2000
ISO 9001:2000 should not mark the end of the contractors' quest to improve quality. Total Quality Management (TQM), though widely implemented in manufacturing and other industries, is rarely practiced in the construction industry. TQM is not merely a set of statistical tools and methods. It comprises a business strategy for harnessing company's resources to achieve world-class quality at minimum costs. This paper examines the receptiveness of contractors to implementing TQM and observes their level of understanding towards ISO 9001:2000 and TQM. Survey findings suggest that most contractors are willing to consider implementing TQM. However, the motivation behind ISO 9001:2000 certification must be analysed to determine if contractors are likely to implement TQM for the correct reason, namely to achieve higher quality standards.
