Two-Dimensional Numerical Wave Tank Simulation for Deployment of Seafloor Mining System
Two-dimensional (2D) numerical wave tanks are developed for simulation of waves of four ocean conditions suitable for deployment of seafloor mining system. A potential theory method based on a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations (RANS) method applying Volume of Fluid and a combination of both is utilized and implemented in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, Fluent. A piston type wave-maker method is proposed to generate waves and porous media technology is applied to form an artificial damping zone to absorb reflected waves. To verify their applicabilities in 2D numerical simulation of ocean waves, the computational results are compared with analytical solutions, showing good agreement; the effect of permeability of porous media is discussed, a suggestion for choosing permeability of porous media is made. It is shown that an efficient method for the simulation of waves is successfully established for research of wave-structure interaction by CFD codes. All results are discussed in detail.
