St John on the Green Hill: the mystic geometry of Giovanni Santini-Aichel
Giovanni Santini has been dismissed by some commentators as being little more than a minor member of the group of emigre Italian artists and craftsmen who flooded into Central Europe in the wake of the Thirty Years War. He was described by Norberg Schultz as 'one of the secondary architects of Bohemia' and by Nikolaus Pevsner as 'a freak from the historian's point of view'. In fact, in spite of his name, he should be regarded as a wholly Czech phenomenon, an inventive and prolific designer who used the late Gothic and Baroque idioms to create an unique Gothico-Baroque blending of his own devising, and whose work has had considerable influence on later generations of Czech architects. The Chapel of Saint John on the Green Hill at Zdar nad Sazavou is probably his most important achievement: a hauntingly beautiful building, which deserves wider recognition.
