Tracing dam seepage using nuclear logging and tracer techniques – a case study
Excessive and uncontrolled seepage through dams is a cause of concern towards dam safety. Dam instrumentation and its monitoring provide early warning of alarming conditions of excessive seepage. Hence, assessment of seepage is imperative to delineate path and source of seepage so that remedial measures can be adapted to reduce the seepage. This paper deals with the application of borehole nuclear logging and tracer techniques employed for tracing the suspected seepage zones and path through the body of dam. The potential of these methods in locating susceptible zones and tracing seepage path is highlighted with the case study of Indirasagar Project, Madhya Pradesh, India.
