The Pudong Development Zone and China's economic reforms
The Pudong Development Zone in Shanghai has been the focus of China's urban development strategy since 1990. The goal of transforming Pudong into Asia's new financial centre runs parallel with the Chinese Communist Party's desire to become a major world economic power in the twenty-first century. This paper examines the Pudong project as a case study of China's economic reforms. It will serve as an analysis of the development project by defining its relationship to the Chinese government's economic and political motivations. In so doing, the paper will render the project more comprehensible by placing it within the larger context of economic development.
