A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This fable is a meditation on the nature and existence of architectural research that-is-not-just-building-science. Perhaps there is none (consciously?). Perhaps it is an impossible idea, born of the entangling of Enlightenment expectations and nineteenth-century positivism. Is research about architecture architectural research? Is architectural history? It may be, or it may not. Is the doing of architecture the only research? Not just designing, but the personal, private communing with the mythos, where even the artist cannot know how or why. This is more than designing. It is the search for the essence of architecture, a Heideggerian-Bachelardian unconscious phenomenological revealing. But what is the essence of architecture alone in the forest, absent the architect absent our perception or conception? Without us. Activity, idea, search for essence, however architectural research exists … at least in the mind.
