Walls of reinforced earth
A French innovation, the technique of reinforcing earth fill with steel strips and a support facing of steel or precast concrete is an economical way of building retaining walls, embankments and the like. Knowledge of their structural behaviour is, however, largely empirical. Here, the authors review international developments and describe recent Hungarian work to test newer theories of dynamic as well as static response.
