Deriving measures of attractiveness for shopping centres
Spencer A. H. (1978) Deriving measures of attractiveness for shopping centres, Reg. Studies 12, 713–726. Classical shopping models are most inadequate in their representation of the attractiveness of shopping centres. Multidimensional scaling, particularly the INDSCAL program, makes it possible to determine the characteristics most strongly perceived by different housewives. A survey in North-East Lancashire shows that housewives share a common perceptual space for centres supplying both groceries and greengroceries, but their emphases on different dimensions vary, often according to their closeness to shops. Dimensions reflecting price, centre size and location occur frequently and the need to include in shopping models both these concepts and measures of housewives' responsiveness to them is indicated.
