A regional analysis of the distribution of married women's labour force participation rates in the UK
Molho I. I. (1983) An analysis of the regional distribution of married women's labour force participation rates in the UK, Reg. Studies 17, 125–134. A model analysing and conceptually simplifying the possible causes of regional variation in participation rates is constructed and contrasted with previous models of regional participation rates. The model is implemented using quarterly data for married women, derived from the Family Expenditure Survey, 1968–77. The major influences are found to be the unemployment rate of their husbands, wage rates, family structure and age structure. An analysis of the causes of regional convergence in participation rates over time indicated that the trend was due to regional convergence in the unemployment rate of married males and the wage rate of married women.
