Between community and culture: The criticality of landscape infrastructure reuse in India
In the Indian subcontinent, the lack or excess of water can be a matter of life or death, making it an incredibly powerful element in the landscape. This essay surveys the reuse of three vernacular hydrological systems, the talaab (man-made pond), the check dam, and the ahar/pyne (basin/channel), to demonstrate that their reuse has also led to other results, such as the empowerment of women, economic benefits, and communal strength. These are complex social issues that are difficult to address in isolation. On the other hand, water scarcity, a challenge faced by many countries, is often addressed through monofunctional solutions. This study argues that though such efforts may address water scarcity, they are a missed opportunity to address other sociocultural problems. The reuse of vernacular water-management landscape infrastructure has great potential to be a multi-faceted design initiative and catalyst for change, not just in its immediate physical landscape, but also in the larger societal world.
