Limestone Building and Indoor Thermal Comfort
Limestone is still much used as a building material in Egypt, as explained in this article, but its thermal characteristics are poor. Studies at the National Research Centre, Dokki, Cairo are presented which compare the thermal characteristics of this age-old material with those of other conventional alternatives and of newer materials such as lightweight concrete. The effects of incorporating either an air space or additional insulation in the construction are then analysed. It is shown that an optimal air space for an external wall is 25 mm wide, but for comfortable indoor conditions in the Egyptian climate the resulting total wall thickness for limestoine remains high at 1.25 m. Only if insulating material is added can the total wall thickness be reduced appreciably, the optimum appearing to be 100 mm of insulation for a wall thickness of 46 cm.
