AUSINDEX – Mid-power bonhomie in the Indo-Pacific
India and Australia are deepening and broadening their bilateral relationship. Increasing economic ties have been matched by this relationship, which has been evolving steadily over the last decade, especially since 2009, when the two countries elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership, fostering defence linkages. The recently concluded AUSINDEX-15 joint naval exercise epitomises the increased engagement and defence cooperation between the two countries. This paper has briefly discussed the historic context of the bilateral relations along with developing shared interests of India and Australia in the Indian Ocean Region. It has further discussed the evolving security architecture of the region which is influenced by the assertive Chinese approach and evolving regional security architecture shaped by middle powers with the US has provided a significant context for AUSINDEX-15.
