Natural hazards and health risks from lakes
Natural hazards from lakes include events such as the drought of astatic lakes, floods from lakes held behind landslides, moraines, avalanches or artificial dams and the eruption of volcanic lakes. Recently catastrophic outbursts of CO2 occurred in two Cameroon lakes. The formation of large artificial or natural bodies of water may result in an increase in the frequency and intensity of earthquakes. As for health risks, about 80% of all diseases in the world are attributable to inadequate water or sanitation. This includes the effects of drinking contaminated water, and water acting as a breeding ground for the carriers of diseases. An overview of the most important waterborne diseases is given.
