Climate change impact on water resources of medium irrigation tank
Tank irrigation is significant in semi-arid regions due to their contribution to water resources management, agricultural practices, livelihood and sustainability. This study was carried out for Phakal watershed, which is situated in the Krishna River Basin, India. This watershed is very important as the catchment provides water for Phakal Lake – a medium irrigation project in Telangana. The assessment of future climate change impacts on Phakal Lake was carried out using Soil and Water Assesment Tool (SWAT). The present and future climate model data are obtained from the CORDEX data repositories. SWAT model was run for IMD data for the period of 1985–2005 for Konduru watershed which is downstream of the study area due to the absence of gauge station at Phakal Lake. SWAT model calibration and validation was carried out for Konduru watershed and the model parameters are transferred to Phakal watershed using regionalization approach. The calibrated and validated SWAT model was applied to Phakal watershed to estimate the inflows for three future periods 2006–2040, 2041–2070 and 2071–2099 and the impact of changing climate on the water resources availability is studied. Based on the results, a decrease as high as 57% in tank inflows is observed in future when compared to baseline period.
