Productivity Levels in Northern Ireland Manufacturing Industry: A Comparison with Great Britain

Censuses of Production are analysed to compare labour productivity differences and trends in manufacturing in Northern Ireland (NI) and Great Britain (GB) between the years 1912 and 1985. The average level of output per head in NI manufacturing for the years 1974–85 is shown to be about 80% of that of GB, while during the 1920s and 1940s NI's comparative manufacturing productivity was about 70%. The role of industrial structure as a possible explanation for lower productivity in Northern Ireland is examined.
