This criticism of research on Regional Culture and Identity in North-East England, reported in Reg. Studies 9, 379–393, is based on four major criteria: its definition of the study area; its sole dependence on the survey method; its sampling framework and the manner in which this was derived; and the statistical and theoretical analysis and presentation of the material. Townsend and Taylor's research, both in its mode of data collection and in its interpretation of that data, does not warrant serious credibility. As such it does not, and should not, merit the influence its authors appear to desire on government policy towards the regions.
