Mega-cities and the urban future
In spite of a proliferation of innovative approaches to urban challenges, the seriousness of urban problems is accelerating and threatening all societies. For more than two decades, foundations and government agencies have supported innovative projects in anticipation that they would be expanded city-wide or replicated across cultures. Sadly, however, successful small-scale initiatives are rarely replicated, if at all. Given the magnitude of urban problems, new methods must be developed to support, adapt, and replicate innovative solutions, and to speed up the process of incorporating new approaches into public policy. One of the key challenges we face at the international, national, and local levels is to reduce the time-lag between urban innovation and its implementation. This paper analyses some of the lessons learned by the Mega-Cities Project in its capacity as an international network of urban leaders.
