Strategies for flood risk reduction in India
Floods are a recurrent phenomenon in many parts of the world. In India, they occur almost every year in some parts of the country and in recent years several areas have been experiencing severe floods, which were almost unheard of a few decades ago. Advances in data collection and in methods of rainfall and hydrologic forecasting and improved flood management by governmental organizations notwithstanding flood risk in each flood season year after year is quite high and consequent loss of life and property continues unabated. This paper revisits flood management in the country and discusses strategies for reducing flood risk and the resulting damage. It also reflects on the role climate change, besides anthropogenic changes, may be playing in the havoc being wrought each year by floods.
