Soft econometric models: An analysis of regional income determinants
Nijkamp P. (1982) Soft econometric models: an analysis of regional income determinants, Reg. Studies 14, 121–8. The paper treats the problem of soft (especially ordinal) data in econometric modelling. After a brief survey of methods dealing with soft data input, the paper pays attention to ordinal explanatory variables and it proposes to use multidimensional scaling techniques as a tool for transforming such data into metric information. Then normal econometric methods can be applied to estimate the parameters of an explanatory model. Some provisional results in the field of regional income determinants in the Netherlands illustrate the above-mentioned approach.
