Temperatures Attained in Naturally Weathered Waterproofing Membranes Used for Roofing
Waterproofing, thermal insulation and other surface finishing materials are directly or indirectly susceptible to solar radiation and weathering on flat roofs. Polymeric and bituminous membranes applied on roofs degrade in the presence of near ultra-violet light, oxygen and heat, thus changing both chemically and physically. Therefore, the temperature of these materials plays an important role in the degradation of the materials. In 1987, a pilot experimental study for natural weathering and testing of some of the locally produced polymeric and bituminous membranes was set up with the purpose of investigating the effect of a hot-dry climate on waterproofing materials used for roofing in Saudi Arabia. During the weathering process, the surface temperatures of these materials, the ambient temperature, and the global solar radiation were simultaneously monitored.
