Equity, Transport, Greenhouse
Changes in travel and land-use patterns in Melbourne since the 1950s have affected women, the elderly and low income households more adversely than the population at large. The spatial dispersion of activities in Melbourne has contributed to the overall deterioration of public transport and to the decline in cycling and walking, on which the above transport disadvantaged groups have relied heavily. Also, these groups are steadily living further away from the city centre, and this accentuates their transport difficulties. A case is argued that reliance on car travel in Melbourne should be reduced to assist the transport disadvantaged and produce other benefits such as reducing greenhouse emissions.
