Changing Role of Planners in a Changing Society
In Europe radical changes are taking place. Social, economic and technological changes will afflict the physical environment and the physical structure. New tasks are put to the decisionmakers: politicians and investors. They put new questions to physical planners and specialists. We cannot handle the questions with traditional answers and solutions. The changes are influencing the role and position of planning and planners itself.
This article will describe new ways in planning and implementation in Amsterdam and new possibilities in the relationship between the public and the private sector. The future role and position of planners is not exactly predictable, but change is necessary. The outcome of that change will depend on the awareness and flexibility of physical planners themselves.
