EXPO 2025 Blue Ocean Dome
This project is the Blue Ocean Dome, which is being built as a corporate pavilion for the 2025 Osaka Kansai Expo. Arup supported Shigeru Ban Architects to realize the structural design to achieve the architectural intent. The building is a one-story structure covering approximately 2500 m2, consisting of three interconnected dome-shaped structures. Each dome is constructed using a different innovative structural material. The first is a dome made of paper tubes, the ball joints of which are newly developed using CLT (Cross Laminated Timber). The second is a dome made of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) using a layered system. The third is a Laminated Bamboo dome. Since none of these materials were approved by Japanese regulations, a great deal of innovation and experimentation were required. Construction is currently underway and is due for completion by the end of 2024.
