COMBINATION OF SCOUR PROTECTION DEVICES AROUND OBLONG BRIDGE PIER
The present study was done in combination with various scour protection devices around oblong bridge pier. The efficiency of scour protection devices was studied through experiments individually and in combination. In present study, a number of protection devices have been tested for checking their performance individually and possible combinations of all these devices around oblong pier. These devices are a collar plate, a sleeve and a collared sleeve around the pier then vanes on upstream side of bridge pier and a delta wing like passive device at the upstream junction of pier. Initially, these individual devices were tested for their optimum dimensions and locations of single protection devices around the pier. Then, these devices were checked in combination for there best performance. The data showed that, combination of collars and vanes around oblong pier results in the most significant scour reduction of about 86.36%. From the results, it was found that combination of two devices is better than performance of individual device. The overall factor of safety for a composite device is much higher than that of any of the individual devices though the elements of risk and conditions warranting susceptibility to failure of a device do not get eliminated in a combination.
