Sustainable management of water resources
Meaningful development must be sustainable development. In this context, therefore, management of water resources must also be sustainable. In the supply-demand interaction there is an increasing emphasis in water management on the reduction of demand. However, water should be considered not only as a resource but also as a major actor in any ecosystem and as a carrier of matter in global biogeochemical cycles. To take into account different functions of water and to pursue sustainable economic development, one needs to exercise basinwide environmental management of water resources. Promotion of this concept is a major strategy of the United Nations Environment Programme.
