Has Aesthetics Been Objectified in Building Project Evaluation?
Efforts to evaluate building projects by developers have focused on the cost of practical aspects of building like capital costs, operation and maintenance costs. Aesthetics falling within what many regard as unquantifiable intangibles, is often given little attention. Aesthetics is largely considered imponderable in dollar terms. This view does not however suggest that aesthetics generally lack sufficient economic sense. Nevertheless, in virtually all cases where economy is the objective, aesthetics is given little or no attention in building project evaluation.
Identifying “objectification” as one of the major causes of this attitude to aesthetics, this paper explores avenues that might lead to better aesthetic understanding and its possible meaningful integration into building project evaluation. Though it sets aside other conceptual frameworks in which building aesthetics might be fruitfully discussed, this action is considered to be beneficial to building clients, architecture and the greater environment. Hence, this paper concludes with a conceptual framework for aesthetic value consideration in building project selection.
