A preliminary nitrification model for a Juncus effusus plant biofilter
A model for ammonia nitrification in a plant biofilter using Juncus effusus. A mass balance modelling approach including consideration of plant uptake, soil sorption and bacterial action was followed to predict effluent nitrogen mass for a series of test runs. Here, two different bacterial biofilm models were applied, viz. zero order partially and fully penetrated. A limited number of test runs were performed as an initial testing of different modelling configurations towards indicating the most apt configuration to use in future more involved modelling. All the modelling approaches showed promising results. However, the zero order partially penetrated model, using dosed influent ammonia concentrations as CLF, most closely fitted the observed results and is recommended for future model calibration and validation for this type of plant biofilter. A statistical analysis was conducted to check whether the model results were statistically significant.
