Recent planning problems of the Netherlands
Steigenga W. (1968) Recent planning problems of the Netherlands, Reg. Studies 2, 105–113. An address to the Autumn 1967 series on Implementation of Planning, in London. The Second Report on Physical Planning in the Netherlands (1966) recognizes that the Netherlands are an urban nation, but it may not be adequate to deal with the forces now operating. As the population increasingly suburbanizes, attempts to restrict urban growth prove unsuccessful in areas like the green heart of the so-called Randstad Holland. Technological and social changes are rendering archaic traditional notions of urbanization. They pose the problem of how the planner should value the preservation of open space. The administrative organization of planning also needs to be re-thought.
