A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Countless people have explored a Baillie Scott garden. The most celebrated is Snowshill Manor, Gloucestershire, a property handed to the National Trust in 1951 by its owner, the architect and collector Charles Paget Wade (1883–1956). Yet, it was not until the late 1970s that the chief credit for the garden's design was given to Baillie Scott rather than to the eccentric Wade. It was then that Aidan de la Mare stumbled across a hitherto mmoticed garden plan (dated 13 February 1920) at Snowshill while rummaging through Wade's papers. As a result, the horticultural journalist Tony Venison, having already published an article in Country Life in May 1978 on Wade's singular and much admired contribution to landscaping (‘An architect's garden idyll: Snowshill Manor’), found himself furnishing a piece for the same magazine entided ‘Snowshill and the Baillie Scott connection’ (April 1980), in which the record was set straight.
