Airports as centres of economic growth
As airports are increasingly attractive locations for economic activity, they have become potential centres of economic growth. However, spin‐off effects have not yet found expression in the financial performance of many regional airports. From their spin‐off effects surrounding places profit the most. While regional airports do not profit from their attractiveness as a business location, governments are paying attention to their financial viability. In order to become more self‐sufficient and to stimulate their role as centres of economic growth, regional airports have to find new ways for profitable operation. An obvious option is to make capital out of their spin‐off, via profiting from business sites in their surroundings. This option is discussed in this article. To profit from spin‐off effects, the airport must cooperate with its surroundings. In this article, different forms of cooperation are illustrated by cases on the airports of Eindhoven, Schiphol and Lyons.
