Low carbon asphalt pavement alternative for parking lots
Asphalt mixture continues to be reclaimed and reused more than any other product in the United States, and cold asphalt pavement recycling takes sustainability one step further. As its name implies, cold recycling is an asphalt pavement rehabilitation method without the application of heat during the construction process. This economical technique is effective in eliminating asphalt pavements’ distress and conserving non-renewable resources and energy. In this case study, cold central plant recycling (CCPR) was used for its benefits and applicability in rehabilitating parking lots. This document aims to present energy and materials saving results, as well as the emission reduction of a CCPR base asphalt course produced for parking lots of a major retailer in the U.S. On average, for a 23,226 m2 (250,000 ft2) parking area, the built pavement yielded 50% in production energy savings, 42% reduction in GHG emissions, and 5,195 tons of material were saved rather than mined, which adds up to 346 truck trips.
