The community-based and co-management concept for coral reef management in the Raja Ampat Islands
Raja Ampat archipelago is located in the heart of the Coral Triangle and its surrounding seas hold a variety of coral species. However, the absence of appropriate management of Raja Ampat’s marine resources has further exacerbated threats of overfishing, destructive fishing, poaching, and unsustainable logging. The Coral Reef Rehabilitation and Management Program (COREMAP) is a 15-year program aiming to achieve sustainable use of coral reefs through the delegation of management authority to local communities. The establishment of effective models for participatory and community-based management is the core of this program.
