Design imperatives for river landscapes
This paper describes the role of creative landscape design in providing for maximum human and natural values together in new or existing river corridors. The ingredients of aesthetic experience and recreational provision are analysed, emphasizing their interrelation with natural processes, especially those involving the complexity and diversity of river alignment and edges. Principles for the integration of human enjoyment and natural values are presented with particular reference to circulation, contact zones and crossings. The role of complexity and its control through ‘structural’ concepts is given special emphasis.
