Difference in human geography—travelling through Anglo-Saxon and scandinavian discourses
The purpose of the present article is two-fold. First, it is supposed to illustrate the contextual character of knowledge. Acknowledgement of the way in which our theoretical discourses vary in accordance with disciplinary tradition and social and political context should sharpen our humility as regards the generality and range of ideas. The second, and related, purpose is to explore the conceptual background of contemporary cultural formulations in urban and regional research. These goals are pursued by means of a travel along the dominant lanes of the debate in the Anglo-Saxon and the Nordic countries and, as a follow-up on that, a discussion of their different employment of key concepts such as subjectivity, culture and difference.
